Pinocchio
Special Project: 200 Years of Collodi
The work was created to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of Carlo Lorenzini aka Carlo Collodi, the author of the adventures of Pinocchio. The work was donated by Gerardo Brogna to the Santa Chiara Conservatory foundation in San Miniato – PI. for a charity auction to be held in November 2026, sponsored by the Tuscany Region and attended by the President of the Region Eugenio Giani.
In this personal artistic interpretation dedicated to the lively character of Pinocchio, the artist wanted to represent the most famous puppet in the world in the digital age, where the mass media dictate fashions, influence societies made of consumerism and super heroes, consecrating sports idols, Oscar winners and where our exuberant protagonist would eat Mc Donald’s while watching Netflix and sipping Coca Cola. The classic iconography of Pinocchio that we all know undergoes a total restyling in an ironic way, undergoing the habits and customs of our contemporary society. Depicted in an imaginative and animated wooden theater, which represents his personal world, made of dreams and desires, our disobedient and naive puppet soon discovers that the world that surrounds and fascinates him also offers illusions, pitfalls and bitter disappointments, thus learning the healthy values of life in spite of himself.
The work is populated by some of the characters, objects and allegories narrated in Collodi’s famous book, trying, despite the bold temporal context created by the artist, not to undermine the original content intended by the writer and above all not to disappoint the predictable expectations of the viewer.
